New World Fine Wines |
The “New World” (according to the wine trade) is anywhere outside Europe.
Countries such as the United States, Chile and Argentina, South Africa, Australia and New Zealand are all now recognised as capable of producing good wines, sometimes, exceptionally good, albeit in a style that reflects the generally warmer growing conditions in most of these countries.
The best New World wines are those which try not to ape their European counterparts, but set the trend with their own styles: Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand, Merlot from Chile, Shiraz and Riesling from Australia, Pinotage from South Africa and Malbec from Argentina. Many of these wines genuinely have no counterparts in Europe and are all the better for it. |
